He was a referral from one of our many repeat customers, we like to thank everyone who sends us new customers. Customer giving referrals are highly appreciated and means a lot to us that we are doing a good job and putting the right effort in to them all.

Gil was after the exotic hard fighting Peacock Bass that are only in South Florida area for the United States. Gil wanted to throw artificial baits all day, we started off with topwater plugs. His first catch was a nice snook that just “exploded” on his bait. Gil caught a nice two pound peacock off topwater and as day went on we went to throwing sub surface lures.

The mid afternoon was slow, but things picked up near the end of day. As always, weather (high winds) are never predictable and today it left us with very few options to choice from. Even so we started with the flies and rapidly realized it wasn’t going to work and pulled out the spinning gear.

We then switch to topwater lures and even live bait in some cases to provoke the bite. All said in done, we caught around 10 peacock bass that ranged from 1-1/2lbs up to 5lbs.

Mother nature didn’t provide the day we were looking for, but Gene & Neil scheduled a new trip next month to fish the Florida Everglades while fly fishing for trophy largemouth bass.

If you are in the South Florida area and would like to get a couple of hours in on a Peacock bass fishing trip, give me call!

You can also read my Everglades blog here!

Tight Lines & Good fishing,
Capt Brett (954) 445-4516
(888) 629-BASS
www.bassonline.com
www.flpeacockbass.com
www.hawghunter.net
www.basson-line.com
www.bassauthority.com

Peacock Bass Fishing Report, Florida

I took Steven Boelsche and his brother Doug from Pinalls, FL out for a fun filled day in Miami for the mighty Peacock Bass.

It started off with some topwater fun, we nailed a snook right off the bat. They flew in for business and decided to fine time to fish a couple of days with us. The first day was in Miami for some hard fighting Peacock bass. Neither angler had ever caught a Peacock bass so I know this was going to be a real treat, and was it ever!

Because of travel arrangements we never started fishing until late afternoon, but this just proves what I have always said, the peacock bass bite all day.

They started out with a few average size Florida peacock bass, then with just a little experience under there belt it happen. The fishing will consist of small lakes, canal systems and deep water structure. The Peacocks can be caught several different ways, the most conventional is topwater, although rattle traps, hard stickbaits and some plastics work exceptionally well. Live bait is always an option and especially good for running up the numbers. The fly fishing enthusiasts will get a thrill for sure, as the Peacock will test your skill and equipment.
Although its basic shape very closely resembles that of the largemouth, it is not actually a member of the largemouth family. It belongs to a family of fish known as "cichlids", one of that boasts more than 1,000 species worldwide and is well known to tropical fish enthusiasts. Like the largemouth, the cichlid prefers to ambush unsuspecting pray from a stealthy vantage point and demonstrates a gluttonous appetite. The similarity ends there, however the Florida Peacock bass is much more eye appealing than its North American counterpart, colorfully adorned in varying shades of green, blue, orange and gold. Don't let this appearance fool you however. It's one of the toughest freshwater species in the world, the bone-jarring strikes, aerial acrobatics and line-stripping runs make it the ultimate quarry for both the fly and plug angler. It routinely breaks line and destroys tackle.
Although four distinct species of peacock bass, known as pavon in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Brazil, are from South America, at lease two or more of the species have made its way to North America (South Florida).
A common characteristic shared by all the species is the black circular "eye spot" dramatically rimmed in gold on the base of the caudal fin. Since this spot closely resembles the one found on the tail plume of the land dwelling fowl, and the profile of the species resembles the North American largemouth, the name Peacock bass became the perfect moniker. The butterfly pavon is one of the most colorful and more plentiful. Typically average two to four pounds, but as seen in the picture above they are getting much larger. (7.6 lbs)
Hope you decide to join us on your next fishing adventure!

Tight lines,
Capt Todd Kersey
todd@bassonline.com
www.bassonline.com
888 629-BASS
